Turkeyburn Spectacularly - Northeast Golf at It’s Outer Limits!
News Release by Christian Harrigan
East Norwich, NY (November 29, 2019): The NY Long Island Golf Channel Amateur Tour (GCAT) visited The Muttontown Club on a sunny and coldish day in very late autumn. The course and greens were in good condition considering we were just two days shy of December. Golfers who could effectively shorten their stroke or stay flexible wearing multiple layers rose to the physical and mental challenge. At the end of the round all golfers were happy to be done with Northeast tournament golf for the season and some were planning their winter two day major schedule. A warm dining room and delicious Muttontown Club buffet awaited golfers at the end of the round for the awards ceremony where very worthy champions were crowned.
Here are your top finishers in the Turkeyburn Spectacular:
Championship/Palmer Flight (0.0 - 7.9)
-
Scott Kata (79) earned his fourth victory of the fall 2019-2020 wrap-around season. Scott is literally 1st of 303 total Palmer point earners across all tours in the nation. At Muttontown Scott waited until the end of the round to separate himself from the competition by going par, birdie, par, birdie in his final four holes. In addition to The Muttontown Club Turkeyburn Spectacular Championship/Palmer Flight Trophy, Scott was awarded a $100 Visa Gift Card.
-
Michael Dupree (83/43) earned the second place prize, a $40 Visa Gift Card, in a match of cards over Mark Kingston. Michael carded one birdie and eight pars on the day, and I am sure the Hudson Valley winner is looking forward to notching a Long Island win in 2020.
Hogan Flight (8.0 – 11.9):
-
Alex Lundqvist (75) achieved the unprecedented when he claimed all three of the closest to the pins, which included two birdie conversions. Anytime a Hogan puts two 2s on the card he has a chance to shoot close to par and dominate the competition, and that’s what happened at Muttontown. Alex surmised that the layers of clothes shortened his swing and improved his ball striking. It looks like the cream of the Hogan flight may find himself competing as a Palmer when we kick off in the spring. If that is the case he went out with a bang, earning The Muttontown Club Turkeyburn Spectacular Hogan Flight Trophy, a $170 Visa Gift Card, and enough contest winnings to pay for the rest of the 2020 season.
-
Michael DeMarco (79) played magnificently, recording a birdie and 11 pars en route to a runner-up finish against a typically robust Hogan field. The separation between second and third place was four strokes, which is more than it has been all season, proof that Mike really played good enough to win. For second place Mike was awarded an $80 Visa Gift Card.
-
Jeff Feldman (83) parred 9 holes on the day, including all four of the par 3s. Jeff finished the wrap-around season with two wins and as the top Long Island point earner in the Hogan Flight. For third place at the Turkeyburn Jeff was awarded a $50 Visa Gift Card.
-
Ron Michne (84/42) earned the fourth place prize in a match of cards over his buddy John Wangner. Ron started the round par, birdie, birdie, a sure-fire way to an overall solid round. For fourth place Ron earned a $40 Visa Gift Card.
Sarazen Flight (12.0 – 15.9):
-
Michael Dwyer (89) earned the Sarazen Flight win after a runner-up at Cherry Creek just six days prior. The key to Mike’s round were his 5 pars from the 10th-18th hole. In addition to THe Muttontown Club Turkeyburn Spectacular Sarazen Flight Trophy, Mike was awarded an $80 Visa Gift Card.
-
John Valente (91) earned the runner-up prize in the Sarzen, a $40 Visa Gift Card. The key to John’s round were consecutive pars from the 8th through the 10th hole.
Jones Flight (16.0 – 19.9):
-
Leon Gorman (83) earned his first Golf Channel victory, and he did it in style, distancing himself from his closest competition by six strokes. Leon carded an incredible 10 pars on the day including consecutive pars from holes 14 through 17. Leon also showed prowess on the par 3’s, parring all four of them. In addition to The Muttontown Club Turkeyburn Spectacular Jones Flight Trophy, Leon was awarded a $100 Visa Gift Card.
-
Thomas Antonopoulos (89) earned a $60 Visa Gift Card for runner-up in the Jones. Thomas has earned second place for the third time this fall and come the spring he is surely looking to improve by one place.
-
Ron Raganella (91) earned a $40 Visa Gift Card for third place in the Jones. Ron won two tournaments in the wrap-around season bringing his Golf Channel trophy total to I am not sure how many, but I am thinking at least 40.
Snead Flight (20.0 – Above):
-
Don Race (102) earned his fifth trophy in six tournaments this fall. Don is the fifth leading Snead Flight point earner of 168 in the nation, and is by far and away the number 1 Long Island Snead Flight competitor. In addition to The Muttontown Club Turkeyburn Spectacular Snead Flight Trophy, Don was awarded an $80 Visa Gift Card.
-
Ron Lessen (103) earned the second place prize, a $40 Visa Gift Card. Ron parred the par 3 14th.
Closest-To-The-Pin
Alex Lundqvist swept the closest to the pin competition! That is a first since we transitioned from two to three chances to win. 14’8” on the 7th, 12’3” on the 15th, 4’7” on the 16th.
